With every innovation made in terms of smartphone design, there is a lot of trial and error process in the background. Just like the most impressive concept smartphone, the VIVO Apex in Mobile World Congress held in February 2018. The device that manages to turn heads with the implementation of fingerprint scanner embedded under the screen itself. That was something which not a lot of pioneering manufacturers were able to pull off.
And now, VIVO is making its way into the flagship smartphone category with the debut of the all-new VIVO NEX just as expected.
Recently unveiled by VIVO in Shanghai, the NEX is here to set another example and a benchmark in terms of display or at least the screen to body ratio. Bringing to the table is a whopping 91.24% screen to body ratio without going the notch way. Sure, the design changes will bring its own sets of caveats, but for the time being one cannot neglect the fact that it is a bold move that VIVO has made.
Here’s everything you need to know about the NEX S.
NEX happens to be a flagship offering from VIVO, which means the processor is a Snapdragon 845. A taller 6.59-inch FHD+ OLED display without any notch bothering your OCD. And there’s a lot that this device has to offer, 8GB of RAM, a whopping 256GB of onboard storage which is non-expandable. All this madness is supported by an equally impressive 4,000mAh battery.
This phone can be called a bezel-less beauty. With a taller display and nearly no bezels on three sides apart from a small chin at the bottom, it makes this device something straight out of future. However, shrinking down bezels, and no notch design means they had to figure out some other way of adding the earpiece and the front-facing camera.
For the earpiece, they have used something called “screen sound-casting technology” which uses the glass surface to produce sound, something like the Xiaomi Mi Mix. As far as it is concerned, they have implemented a new popup camera which elevates from the top edge when needed. And of course, we can’t forget the in-display fingerprint scanner implemented beneath the display.
The back of the phone houses a dual camera setup. This duo includes a primary 12MP f/1.8 lens backed by a 5MP f/2.4 lens which is for giving you that bokeh or the portrait mode shots. The real star has to be the front-facing camera that pops up from the top corner. For specs though, it is an 8MP camera with a f/2.0 aperture. We have seen the perks of a moving part on a phone in the past. Only time will tell how well this piece of engineering holds up over time.
Pricing and Availability
In short, if you want a flagship 2018 smartphone without any notch blocking your view, NEX is for you. As of now, the device is supposed to be only released in China. Priced at 4998 yuan which translates to $780 approx. But with competitors like Xiaomi and OnePlus, the price definitely is higher.
There’s also a lower spec model — known as the Vivo Nex A — with a Snapdragon 710 processor, with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. However, it doesn’t get the benefit of an in-display fingerprint scanner.
The phone’s surely a step in the right direction but only time will tell how this smartphone stacks up against the competing brand names. Stay tuned if you want to know more.
