It has been just a couple of days since the Galaxy Fold launch and Huawei has already come up with its own foldable phone — the Mate X. The difference is that the Galaxy Fold folds from the inside, while the Mate X folds from the outside. While it looks fancier and appealing to eyes, it has the same functionality as the Fold — i.e. a phone plus tablet. Similarly, it adds support for 5G connectivity and has a super fast charging capability.
Talking about the charging, the device comes with a 55W SuperCharge that can charge 85% of battery in just 30 minutes, making it one of the fastest charging devices in the market, topping its own Mate 20 Pro.
The Huawei Mate X, when in tablet mode, has an 8-inch display with a resolution of 2480 x 2200 pixel. Whereas, when folded, the phone’s display measures 6.6-inch on the front(2480 x 1148) and 6.3-inch on the back. This also makes the aspect ratio of 19.5:9. By the looks of it, the display is not only made of glass but also plastic so the durability is yet to be seen; especially if it will scratch or not.
Alongside a secondary screen on the back, the Mate X also has a grip for the support that also sports three cameras. However, there’s no list of camera specs. Regardless of that it still has Leica branding on it so we should expect a Mate 20 Pro class picture if not better. The primary camera also doubles as a selfie snapper so you shouldn’t expect anything less.
Coming to the internal specs, the Huawei Mate X will rock Kirin 980 processor alongside Balong 5000 — Huawei’s dedicated chipset for 5G connectivity. Cohesively, this will help the device to provide a buttery smooth transition and 4x faster network speed than that of 4G. And yes, it supports dual SIM card and has an option for expansion through NanoSD card.
Measuring the thickness of the device, it’s one of the thinnest tablet around, measuring just 5.4mm which is thinner than the new iPad. When folded, the device measures 11mm in thickness. That just makes it a light device to carry whether you use it as a phone or tablet.
The whole device will be powered by a huge 4,500mAh battery which can be charged through a USB Type-C port. The side sees the placement of a fingerprint scanner, that also acts as a power button. No any in-display fingerprint scanner here.
As for the cost, Mate X is definitely not cheap. The device will be priced at €2,299(approx $2600) with 8GB RAM/512GB of storage and will release later this year.
