DJI, a world leader in drones is now aiming to be the best in the business rivaling against GoPro’s popular action cameras. However, this is not the first time the two companies are locking horn against each other; dating back to 2016 GoPro announced their own lineup of drones to compete against DJI but failed to gain the market, discontinuing the products less than two years later.
As every action camera should be, the DJI Osmo Action sports a durable chassis that is shockproof (against drops up to 5 feet), dustproof, waterproof up to 36 feet without any case and freezeproof for up to minus 10-degree Celsius.
Both the front and back of the action camera comes with a color screen which DJI calls as “a unique design feature that allows for more convenient scene composition while on the move”. The back screen measures 2.25-inches in size that parry water as well as fingerprints.
The front has a 1.4-inch screen, which unlike GoPro, let vloggers see their shots allowing them to capture videos and selfies easily. Both screens feature a brightness of 750nits making it visible in direct sunlight.
The DJI Osmo Action consists of three buttons: power on, start recording and rotate through video and capture modes. There’s also a SnapShot feature that lets you turn on the camera and start capturing by pressing the shutter button, all this in less than two seconds. The Osmo Action also supports voice commands allowing you to control the camera in the nub of action.
Let’s get into detail here. The Osmo Action sports a 1/2.3-inch sensor for capturing 12-megapixel photos (JPG or RAW) and 4K video up to 60fps at 100Mbps. The sensor hides behind a three-glass aspherical lens that tones down warping and distortion. DJI has also protected the lens with anti-fingerprint and anti-reflective coatings.
The Osmo Action can also shoot HDR videos with extra 3 stops of dynamic range to maintain details that are often lost in low lighting conditions. The Osmo Action draws inspiration from DJI’s stabilized camera in drones for the action cam’s image stabilization. It is also first of its kind from DJI to ever come with RockSteady Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) in a handheld camera.
The EIS should allow users to capture every moment in smooth, stable and high quality even while recording in 4K/60fps.
Other noticeable features of DJI Osmo Action includes a removable battery which can shoot 4K/30fps with EIS or 135m shooting at 1080p/30fps with no EIS for 93 minutes, a speaker, dual microphones, slow motion (8x at 1080p/240fps or 4x at 1080p/120fps), manual exposure, and timelapse. It is also compatible with a large number of accessories from DJI or third party.
