Nepal Telecom announced the initial testing of its digital payment gateway, Namaste Pay nearly 4 months back. Today the company has announced the commercial launch of its digital wallet. Namaste Pay is a product of the Nepal Digital Payments Company, which is established under the collaboration of Nepal Telecom and Rastriya Banijya Bank.
One of its kind in Nepal, Namaste Pay is the only offline payment gateway in the nation to date. Meaning, it doesn’t require an internet connection at all to make payments.
The system leverages users’ mobile numbers for both the wallet and the mobile balance. Though, users still can’t use their mobile balance to make payments.
While users with smartphones can make use of the mobile wallet for online payments, users carrying feature phones, on the other hand, can use the USSD code generated via *500# for offline payments.
The stable version of the mobile app is yet to make the Play Store for Android and App Store for iOS users, though you can still test the beta version from Google Play Store here.
Namaste Pay is the largest payment service provider in Nepal with NPR 40 crores paid-up capital. Other popular payment service providers such as IME Pay and eSewa have the paid-up capital of NPR 10 crores and NPR 5 crores respectively.
