Samsung’s second foldable phone at the launch event in Nepal is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 with a clamshell design. The Z Flip 3 brings much-needed improvements to both inside and outside screens alongside IPX8 rating like its counterpart, the Galaxy Z Fold 3.
To start off, as everyone might know by now that the Flip 3’s cover display is much larger than the previous, it brings a 1.9-inch Super AMOLED panel with 260 x 512 resolution. This makes it much easier to interact with notifications and play with a larger selection of apps without needing to open the phone.
The foldable panel on the inside has also got a slight upgrade — it still offers the 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED panel with Full HD+ resolution, but Samsung has delivered a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate that everyone was asking for.
Close the clamshell phone and you get a dual-camera right alongside the cover display which is now aligned vertically with the LED flash. The dual-camera offers a 12MP f/1.8 primary sensor with 1.4µm pixels, Dual Pixel AF and OIS, alongside a 12MP f/2.2 ultrawide shooter, making it similar to what you would see on its successors.
- Display: 6.7-inches Dynamic AMOLED 2x panel, 120Hz, Gorilla Glass Victus “Main Display”; 1.9-inches Super AMOLED “Cover Display”, 60Hz, Gorilla Glass DX cover display
- Resolution: FHD+ (2636 x 1080 pixels), 21.9:9 aspect ratio on main and 300 x 112 pixels on cover
- Chipset: Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 (5nm)
- CPU: Octa-core (1x Cortex-X1 @ 2.84GHz, 3x Cortex-A78 @ 2.42GHz, 4x Cortex-A55 @ 1.80GHz)
- GPU: Adreno 660
- Memory: 8GB LPDDR5 RAM, 128GB/256GB UFS 3.1 storage
- Software & UI: Android 11 with One UI 3.1 on top
- Rear Camera: Dual-camera; 12MP, f/1.8 primary sensor; Dual Pixel PDAF, OIS + 12MP, f/2.2 ultra-wide lens; Single LED flash
- Selfie Camera: 10MP, f/2.4 aperture; PDAF
- Fingerprint sensor: Side-mounted
- Battery: 3,300mAh battery with 15W wired, 10W wireless, and 4.5W reverse wireless charging
There’s also a selfie camera put inside the punch-hole cutout on the main display, and that one is also similar to its previous models — a 10MP sensor with an f/2.4 lens. Nothing much has changed in terms of optics, so you can safely bet on previous models as well, but only if you’re ok with a tiny cover screen. This one has a larger cover display making it easier to shooter selfies with the main camera.
Another upgrade is in terms of the internals as we get the Snapdragon 888 chipset with 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of UF 3.1 storage. The phone also gets sub6 and mmWave 5G, though we are not sure if the latter is available in the Nepali market.
The exterior of the Z Flip 3 is covered with Gorilla Glass Victus, while the exterior has an Armor Aluminum frame, just like the Z Fold 3, so there’s not much to worry about the durability. Even if you mess it up, Samsung has got you covered with its insurance (which we’ll talk about later).
Finally, the battery. It remains unchanged at 3,300mAh capacity just like its prior offerings. Sadly, it also has the same 15W charging, which is unimpressive given the price.
