There’s no denying that the flooded smartphone market is all due to brands competing against one another with their offerings at a certain price range. Same holds the case with the Huawei Y7 Pro 2019 and the Oppo A5s, both coming in at the sub 20k price bracket. Which one should you pick? Let’s take a dive into it and put these two devices side by side.
Build and Display
Starting off with the build and display on both of the devices. The Oppo A5s comes with a 6.2-inch IPS LCD display with a dewdrop notch. The 1520x720p resolution and a 19:9 aspect ratio gives this one a screen to body ratio of 81.6 percent. The back is plastic which makes it prone to fingerprint and scratches and is the major takeaway with regards to the in-hand feel.
Moving on to the Huawei Y7 Pro 2019, we have a 6.26-inch IPS LCD panel to the front which also houses a dewdrop notch. Resolution on this one also happens to be 1520x720p with a 19:9 aspect ratio and the screen to body ratio at 80 percent. The back on this one is also plastic meaning a similar in hand feel to that of the Oppo A5s.
Regardless of which one you pick up, the devices are bare bones similar feeling and even look identical. But with some interesting color options to choose from, the Huawei Y7 Pro 2019 is on a totally different league. However, the display of the phones are near to similar; the one on Huawei is color accurate, while the OPPO A5s has a quite vivid display with more contrast to it.
Software and Performance
Both of the devices run on Android 8.1 Oreo, with their own custom skins on top. Both skins have their own pros and cons but if I were to pick one up, I would definitely prefer EMUI over color OS as the color OS on the Oppo devices to me look cartoonish and the entire user experience takes a toll as it feels a little half baked.
When it comes to performance, however, Oppo A5s takes the lead with a more powerful MediaTek Helio P35 SoC underneath compared to the low power Snapdragon 435 on the Huawei Y7 Pro 2019. Which doesn’t particularly mean the Y7 Pro 2019 is a slouch, be it normal day to day tasks or even some gaming, it has all handled pretty darn well but when it comes to benchmark and consistency in performance the higher clock speed on the Oppo A5s gives it an edge. Both these devices come with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage which adds up to the list of similarities
Cameras
Alongside the smartphones, the cameras too have evolved quite significantly over the past couple of years. Both the devices have 13+2MP dual camera setup to their back. When it comes to cameras, it’s needless to say Huawei takes away the crown with the Huawei Y7 Pro 2019 being a great camera phone than the Oppo A5s.
All thanks to the wider f/1.8 aperture on the Huawei Y7 Pro 2019 compared to f/2.2 on the A5s, the natural bokeh is profound while clicking macro shots and this helps the Y7 Pro nail the low light shots as well. The pictures taken on the Y7 Pro 2019 are well detailed with accurate colors and a better dynamic range than the ones shot on A5s. Plus the AI on the Y7 Pro 2019 does a decent job to produce images with eye-popping colors in it.
Video is capped at 1080p on both one and just like with images, Huawei wins on the video front as well. It’s the same story with the selfie cameras as well, the 16MP front facing camera on the Huawei Y7 Pro 2019 simply blows the 8MP snapper on the Oppo A5s out of water.
Battery Life
The Huawei Y7 Pro 2019 comes with a 4,000mAh battery while the Oppo A5s comes with a slightly larger 4,230mAh battery. But as it’s said specs don’t tell you the entire story. The Snapdragon 435 despite being low powered, is slightly more power efficient chipset than the Helio P35 on the Oppo A5s. The endurance and standby time, both being better on the Huawei Y7 Pro 2019, Huawei wins this as well.
Verdict
Regardless of which one you pick you will not be disappointed with any of the two devices. However, if you ask which one is a perfect bang for the buck, hands down, it has to be the Huawei Y7 Pro 2019, as it is slightly cheaper at Rs. 18,490 in Nepal and is overall slightly better over the Rs.19,990 offering from Oppo, the A5s.
