The New Year has started, so as Huawei’s new entrant to its ever-growing smartphone lineup in Nepal. This time it is the Huawei Y9s — a successor to the popular Y9 Prime 2019, which had a pop-up selfie camera.
Announced at Huawei Media Meetup, the phone’s availability in Nepal was pretty inevitable but people were left guessing about the price and the specs it came with. And we must say it’s pretty much similar to what you would get from its predecessor. The Y9s have the same 6.59-inch IPS LCD Full View display with 1080 x 2340 pixels which automatically translates to the same aspect ratio as well as pixel density.
Now to talk about the major difference — the phone’s camera. The Huawei Y9s has an array of the triple-camera lens. While a triple-camera may not sound as intimidating over quad-cameras, the phone’s certainly got some capability. The significant change can be seen in terms of its primary rear sensor, which has a 48MP, f/1.8 lens that comes with PDAF over the 16MP on the Y9 Prime 2019. Rest assured, it retains the same 8MP, f/2.4 ultra-wide sensor, and a 2MP, f/2.4 depth sensor for portrait shots.
- Display: 6.59″ IPS LCD screen, 19.5:9 aspect ratio
- Resolution: 1080 x 2340 pixels (~391 PPI pixel density)
- Chipset: HiSilicon Kirin 710F
- CPU: Octa-core (4 × 2.2GHz Cortex-A73 and 4 ×1.7GHz Cortex-A53)
- GPU: Mali-G51 MP4
- OS: Android 9 Pie, EMUI 9.1
- Memory: 6GB RAM, 128GB storage; expandable via microSD card up to 512GB
- Primary Camera: Triple camera; 48MP, f/1.8, PDAF, 0.8µm + 8MP ultrawide, f/2.4 + 2MP, f/2.4, depth sensor
- Selfie Camera: 16MP, f/2.2; motorized pop-up
- Battery: Non-removable Li-Po 4,000mAh battery
The front also sees the same 16MP sensor for selfies but with a small aperture of f/2.2. The selfie sensor, like the previous iteration, is tucked inside a motorized pop-up module which helps eliminate any kind of notch.
Besides the camera, there’s nothing much of a difference over the Y9 Prime 2019. It still has the same Kirin 710F SoC, with 6GB of RAM in comparison to 4GB and a 128GB UFS 2.1 storage, which is expandable via microSD card up to 512GB.
Powering the phone is pretty impressive 4,000mAh battery, whilst out of the box, it still comes with Android 9 Pie on top of EMUI 9.1. And in case you’re wondering, yes, it has Google Play Services. This means you can easily access YouTube, Gmail, and plethoras of other Google services. Another noticeable feature includes the fingerprint scanner at the side, which also acts as a power button.
