The Government of Nepal is planning to launch a new integrated “National Payment Gateway” starting Bhadra 2077. It’s said to integrate Governmental, international, private wallet, and card payments, built upon infrastructures that meet international level criteria.
The Tech Journos Forum (TJF) Nepal had organized a webinar on Friday featuring the Executive Director of the National Information Technology Center, Government of Nepal (NITC GoN), Mr. Sushil Paudel who mentioned the preparation of National Payment Gateway and the completion of necessary infrastructures. He stated the gateway to be “a one-stop system that incorporates Government and social security expenses and payments to the private sector.”
The Office of the Auditor General, Government of Nepal has been developing the system and could launch anytime within Shrawan 2077.
Consumers can keep track of the real-time payment and the actual income and expense. Also, Mr. Poudel affirms the National Information Technology Center is well aware of system security. For now, the system is said to be capable of handling 1,000 payments per second, while it could increase in the future in need.
NITC will initially be using the system in order to handle payments to the Government and gradually incorporating Government payments, private wallets and card transactions, and international payments. Hence, the system is expected to integrate and ease transactions within cards, wallets, e-commerce, e-check, credit/debit transfer, bill payment.
The National Payment Gateway will bound the likes of Mobile Service Providers, Commercial Banks, and Government Bodies. Nepal Rastra Bank will be monitoring and supervising, whilst the National Information Center will be looking after privacy and security. Nepal Telecommunication Authority, on the other hand, is said to look after cybersecurity.
